If you want your skateboard wheels to spin faster so you can go faster, the problem is not always with the wheels. You can actually do a few things to make your skateboard wheels go faster:

  • Slightly loosen the axle nuts.
  • Clean the contact surface of the wheels.
  • Clean the skateboard bearings if they are dirty and noisy.
  • Switch the wheels to avoid a difference in size
  • Buy high-quality bearings

Loosening the axle nuts is the first and easiest way to make skateboard wheels spin faster. If they are too tight, your wheels won’t be able to turn freely. You can also clean or replace the wheels and bearings if needed.

Most of the time, you don’t need to do all of the above to make your wheel spin faster. You may find, though, that the best thing for you to do is a mix of things.

The choices we give you here are not set in stone. You will find that you do these things often as part of regular maintenance. Keeping these things on a schedule will make a difference in how much you enjoy the sport, whether it’s cleaning the wheels or putting oil on the bearings.

1. Loosen Your Axle Nuts

When your skateboard wheels don’t spin as fast as you’d like, the first thing you should try is to loosen the axel nuts. It’s easy to do, and you might find that you can fix things quickly and get back on the board.

Before making any changes to the axle nuts, spin the wheels by hand to check the wheels and how tight the axle nuts are. When you spin them, they should go around freely and slowly stop.

You’ll know there’s a problem if the wheels spin and then stop quickly, or if they stop and then go the other way. If that’s the case, it’s likely that the axle nuts are too tight.

Using a skate tool, slightly loosen the axle nut. Turn it against the clock, but don’t turn it too much. Most of the time, all it takes is a small turn to get things moving again. It is better to make a few small changes than to try to make it tighter by going too far on the first try.

Once the axle nut is loose, spin the wheel by hand again. Continue to loosen it up a little at a time until the wheel spins smoothly and doesn’t stop suddenly.

If the wheel starts to move around on the axle, that’s another sign that you’ve gone too far. If that’s the case, tighten the axle nut a little.

There will always be a good spot, and eventually you’ll know how much to change things. You might do it often, so make sure you always have a skate tool in your pocket or backpack.

2. Wipe off the wheels of your skateboard

You will likely find that you have to clean the wheels often. It’s easy to do, and it can change both how fast and how the ride feels.

It doesn’t make a big difference, but if the contact patch has gum or tar on the wheels, you can sometimes get rid of it by gently sliding the skateboard back and forth on the pavement. Make sure the wheels don’t get flattened in the process.

If you need to clean the wheel because it has a lot of oil or grease on it, you can use a skateboard wrench to take the wheels off. The best thing to do is clean all of the wheels at once.

After you take off the wheels, you’ll need to take off the bearings. Do not use the same solution to clean the bearings and the wheels.

Warm soapy water should be used to clean the wheels. As the soap, you can use Dawn dishwashing liquid or another kind of dishwashing liquid.

To clean the wheels well, you might have to scrub them. You can be careful with a wire brush or use an old toothbrush. When you scrub the wheel, be careful not to damage it.

Before putting the wheels back on, make sure they are dry. Putting the bearings back on before the wheels are dry will cause rust, which will be a problem. Also, if you don’t dry the wheels well, they will get dirty more quickly.

The best way to get as much water out of skateboard wheels as possible is to use dry paper towels. After drying the wheels, leave them out in the sun for a few hours to dry them even more.

Even though it’s not necessary, you might want to turn the wheels now that they’re already off. This will make them last longer and prevent uneven wear.

You might also want to clean the bearings while you have the wheels off. The speed of your skateboard wheels can be affected by how well you take care of the bearings.

3. Clean the bearings in your wheels

Most likely, cleaning the skateboard bearings will make the most difference in how fast your skateboard wheels go. Only because it’s not the easiest choice did I not put it at the top of the list.

Dirt and grease will build up on the bearings just like they do on the wheels. The bearings will eventually slow down, and if you wait too long, they might even lock up, making it impossible to move.

If you take care of the bearings, they will last for a long time. It will also keep your skateboard’s wheels from slowing down.

Use a skate tool or wrench to take off the wheels. Don’t lose the washers and axle nuts after you take the wheel off. You can keep them in a small pan until you are ready to put things back together again.

After you take the bearings out of the wheels, you need to take off the bearing shield. Be careful not to bend or change the shape of the shield. If you did that, it could rub against the bearings and make the wheels move more slowly.

You can clean the bearings with a cleaner or solvent that doesn’t contain water. You can use acetone, mineral spirits, or rubbing alcohol, among other things. You can let the bearings sit in the solvent or cleaner for a few minutes or scrub them with a toothbrush to speed things up.

Tap the bearings on a paper towel or rag to get rid of as much of the cleaner or solvent as you can. You can also help clean things by using compressed air.

Use a lubricant that is made for that purpose when you want to grease the bearings. Don’t use WD-40 or another spray oil like it because it will wear off quickly and ruin the bearings.

You only need one or two drops in each bearing, which you then spin to cover the bearing completely. This is done again and again for each bearing until they are all properly oiled.

Check the bearings to see if they are broken. If there are problems that can’t be fixed by just cleaning, they should be changed. This is also a great time to upgrade the bearings, since the right bearings will help the wheels turn faster.

Put the bearings back on the wheels and the shields back on the bearings.

4. Change the order of the wheels

If you ride a lot, you may find that every few months you need to change your wheels. You can make them last longer before you have to replace them by turning them on the axles. Switch the right front with the left back, and then switch the other two.

You might see some flat spots or telltale signs of a flat spot. When the shape of the wheels is wrong, it makes the ride uncomfortable and slows the car down.

If you switch wheels around often, they will wear out at the same rate, so you won’t end up with 4 different-sized wheels.

5. Get a good set of wheels

If you take care of your bearings the way we told you above, they will last a very long time. There may be times when you need to change them, or you can do it just to make the wheels go faster.

When you need new bearings, you will usually notice that your wheels don’t spin freely for more than a few seconds or that you have to push hard when you skate. Bad bearings can also make a lot of squeaking sounds.

If you clean and lube your bearings and they still don’t spin right, it’s time to replace them. All skateboard bearings come in the same size, so you don’t have to worry about getting the right size for your wheels.

You don’t have to get bearings from the same company as the wheels, but you should get good bearings from a well-known company.

Often, you can speed up your wheels by making small changes and replacing things when you need to. You can combine different wheels and bearings to make something that works well and looks good.

Sometimes a small change will make your skateboard wheels spin faster, and sometimes it will take some work or even trial and error to find the right spot. When you do find it, you’ll have an even better time on the board.

Conclusion

How fast a skateboard goes depends on its wheels. Wheel bearings are also an important part of how well the wheel works as a whole.

As I said before, it’s not that hard to make the wheel spin faster again. If you do what we say, you will get it done quickly.

I hope this article helped you.
